Are HSS and SSS the same?

The HSS Stratocaster is very similar to the SSS version, with the exception of a Fender humbucker replacing the single-coil bridge pickup. This means a big difference in sound when the first position of the pickup selector is engaged.

The major difference between them is that a SSS Strat has single coil pickups at neck, middle and bridge positions while a HSS Strat has single coils in neck and middle positions and humbucker at bridge position.

Does a Stratocaster sound different than a Telecaster?

They each have a master volume control, but where the Tele only has one tone control, the Strat has dedicated tone knobs for the middle and bridge pickups. The switching, however, is another story. What’s more, it is mounted on the Tele’s metal bridge plate, which can give it a more powerful tone.

Who is the HSS setup aimed for?

The HSS setup, imo is aimed for if you want to play stuff that has a really crunchy sound, on a Strat and get it closer to that (say for example led Zep,ZZ Top, AC/DC) because those guys use a bridge HB and not single coils, lol…

Should I split the HSS?

Splitting the HSS doesn’t quite get the signature Strat tones due to the pickup angle and the voicing of that pickup. You lose two of the five switch positions this way. My suggestion is to get the SSS, and install an option to get series out of the guitar for when you want it or need it.

Do I need a humbucker for HSS?

If you like the strat sound yet need a humbucker, go HSS. The humbucker is only really important in 1 of the 5 pickup positions. the bridge single coil sounds better for country lead guitar, IMO. but for hard rock like ACDC, the Humbucker is preferred. I think you’d be better suited for HSS.

Is the 4 selector switch supposed to be a humbucker sound?

But I know the 4 selector switch is supposed to be a humbucker sound…mid and bridge pick up. HSS is more flexible and yes you can split the H to get a non-humbucker sound that is more singlecoilish. But it’s not a true SC sound, it’s a compromise.
