There is no typical IMO contestant. The 100 or so countries are very different in preparation, background and everything. Also, each contestant is very different. Some of them are very devoted to studying for IMO, some are learning math just for the sake of learning math (not everything related to Olympiads). I spent a variable amount of time.

Two to three good IMO problems daily will be good for preparation apart from the daily practice (at least 2 hours) of easy school problems and reference book problems.
