: The first level exam consists of 70\% syllabus from the previous class. You must practice with previous year papers of IMO. What is the typical IMO contestant like?

There is no typical IMO contestant. The 100 or so countries are very different in preparation, background and everything. Also, each contestant is very different. Some of them are very devoted to studying for IMO, some are learning math just for the sake of learning math (not everything related to Olympiads). I spent a variable amount of time.

How to prepare for the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)?

Practice Is the key for IMO . Be thorough with combinatorics, number theory, functions and geometry. They are the most important portions for the olympiad. Two to three good IMO problems daily will be good for preparation apart from the daily practice (at least 2 hours) of easy school problems and reference book problems.

Should I do math as an aspiring IMO student?

If you are someone aspiring to go to IMO, I suggest you should not think about the time commitment too much. Amount of time has very little to do with it. When you start, you should do math because you love it. That’s how it started with me and everyone I know.
