Why don’t we use diagnostic categories in IEPs?
Mostly because IEPs are to be needs-driven, not diagnosis-driven. The goals and supports and services that are in an IEP should be based on what the child needs, not a diagnosis or eligibility category. Every child in the same eligibility category should not be receiving exactly the same thing. But, now, reluctantly, I’m going to do so.
How often are IEPs for students with special needs updated?
IEPS for students with special needs are updated every year, ideally before classes start. An annual review lets parents and teachers evaluate which goals were met and which will need additional work in the coming year.
