The average weight cut of UFC fighters is around 15-20 pounds in the last five days before the weigh-in. They do that by using the dehydration process I’ve described earlier, as it allows them to regain a good chunk of that weight before they step into the octagon.

Weight cutting is how a fighter manipulates his/her weight to increase his/her chance of winning a fight. Because a fighter can lower his/her weight during a weigh-in, he/she can then show up to the actual fight 10-20 pounds heavier than his/her opponent.

As a general rule, UFC fighters will ‘cut weight’ if they want to fit into a certain weight class before their next bout. They will attempt to lose enough weight to do so prior to the fight’s weigh-in (usually a day before the fight), before putting at least some of that weight back on again.

Fighters have to eat something. Since they’re avoiding carbs, Dr. Berardi advises them to load up on high-quality protein like meats, eggs or a vegetarian sources of protein. Rice and potatoes are both carb-heavy foods so will keep a fighter’s energy up throughout the day. Meanwhile, a fighter’s protein intake is maintained by eating chicken. The teriyaki source is a low calorie way of adding flavour to the meal, but it is high in sodium.
