Does the Sorting Hat let you choose your house?
The hat doesn’t let students choose their Houses. However, it will take students’ preferences into it’s consideration. Like when Harry pleaded not to be placed into Slytherin.
Did the sorting hat select a house for the new students?
The hat sorts him into Gryffindor. Harry’s choice of telling the Hat “Not Slytherin” was not just him choosing houses, it was a demonstration of his true persona: he was not someone whose ambition ruled his choices. Harry’s choice, interestingly enough, also ruled him out of Ravenclaw.
What House did the hat want to assign Harry Potter to first?

What does Sorting Hat say to Harry?
In the final book, Harry goes on to tell his son Albus that “the Sorting Hat takes your choice into account.” So you’ll never truly end up somewhere you don’t fit. Even if you’re not cunning, but you strive to be (like Malfoy), you’ll probably still end up in Slytherin.
Is the sorting hat always right?
No, never. And here’s why: The sorting hat gets to decide for itself what is “right” or “wrong” in sorting. If the sorting hat wanted to put Neville in Slytherin, it would still be the right decision because the sorting hat chooses right or wrong for itself.
What is the purpose of sorting students into houses in Hogwarts?

It measures the potential in students – so that a student Sorted into Ravenclaw has more academic potential than a student Sorted into Gryffindor – but discounts the fact that people can and do change throughout their lives.
