Why do birds hop and not walk?
Almost all birds are capable of doing both, but it’s normally more energy efficient for small birds to move by hopping. Their light bodies are easy to bounce into the air and they cover much more distance in a single hop than a walking stride from their short legs.
Why do birds jump walk?
Hopping all the time would use up a lot of energy, and so they have evolved to walk more smoothly. It also helps with speed – birds that spend a lot of time on the ground need to be able to quickly run into cover to escape from a potential predator! Exceptions to this rule are magpies and jays, which hop.
Why do birds hop up and down?

Do finches walk hop?
A few families of small birds that hop are the finches, sparrows, and warblers (one exception is the ground nesting warbler, the ovenbird. How is walking different from hopping?
Switch-sidling means moving to the right or to the left by crossing one foot over the other in an exaggerated “pigeon-toed” step. Hopping, of course, requires moving both feet simultaneously. When unconstrained by such a narrow perch, many birds walk or run using the alternating strides typical of most bipeds.
What does it mean when a bird hops?
Hopping. A bird moving along a telephone wire does not walk like a tightrope artist; instead, the bird will “sidestep,” “switch-sidle,” or “hop.” Sidestepping (the way that people typically move along a ledge) involves alternately lifting each foot and moving it to the side while continuing to keep the same foot ahead.

Is hoof hopping good for birds?
Hopping works best for small, lightweight birds with short legs. Each hop takes them as far as several steps if they were walking normally, so they use less energy. But even though it beats walking, hopping is slower than running.
Are there any wild birds that don’t hop?
There are always exceptions. Wagtails are small birds, but they spend much of their time on the ground chasing insects and so they run, rather than hop. Birds that run or walk, such as partridges and moorhens, spend much of their time on the ground.
