How do guns function?
Operating principle. Most guns use compressed gas confined by the barrel to propel the bullet up to high speed, though devices operating in other ways are sometimes called guns. In firearms the high-pressure gas is generated by combustion, usually of gunpowder.
What is inside a bullet?
Most pistol bullets are made of a lead-antimony alloy encased in a soft brass or copper-plated soft steel jacket. In rifle and machine-gun bullets, a soft core of lead is encased in a harder jacket of steel or cupronickel. Armour-piercing bullets have a hardened-steel inner core.
Do guns need fuel?
Think of a Machine Gun as a one-cylinder internal combustion engine. The gunpowder is the fuel—a dry fuel contained in brass containers. The Primer is the single-use spark plug and the trigger is both the accelerator and the brake. The bullet becomes a single-use piston.
Can guns run out of gunpowder?
No. Gunpowder is not a natural resource that can be depleted. Historically, black powder was made of sulfur, charcoal and potassium nitrate.
Where do guns get power?
In this method, the energy required to operate the gun is obtained from the pressure of gas tapped off from the barrel after each cartridge explodes. In a typical gas-operated machine gun, an opening or port is provided in the side of the barrel at a point somewhere between the breech and the muzzle.

How does a slug gun work?
Slugs are molded chunks of metal, nylon or plastic. In effect, they turn a shotgun into a crude rifle. Slugs are fired individually, like bullets, instead of in bunches like buckshot and birdshot . They can come in a variety of shapes, but they are often tapered into a bullet shape.

How do automatic guns work?
In an automatic weapon, some of the energy from the bullet is used to replace the movements previously done by the operator in removing the spent bullet. So energy from the bullet pushes the bolt back, which removes the spent casing, then a spring pushes the bolt back forwards where it grabs the next bullet and loads it into the chamber.
