Why do I sound better humming than singing?

Does everybody have vibrato?
No one’s born with vibrato. Like any other singing technique like belting or vocal fry, vibrato is something that comes the more you work at it. But vibrato comes out most when the voice is in balance. And learning to sing in balance takes time.
Why do some singers use vibrato when they sing?
It is the result of a singer developing proper breath support, learning to relax the vocal apparatus and having moderately firm contact between the vocal folds. Singers of styles requiring minimal vibrato either reduce firmness of vocal fold contact (creating a somewhat breathy sound) or use firmer vocal fold closure (as in belting).
What is natural vibrato and how does it work?
Natural vibrato occurs when the vocal folds vibrate as air passes through them without unnecessary tension. This means that a relaxed voice is required to produce the healthiest vibrato. Because the oscillations are produced freely, they are evenly spaced, and when the voice is supported and resonant, it sounds very pleasing to the ear.
Can a singer produce a counterfeit version of vibrato?
The voice needs to be ready, and solid technique needs to be in place first. Otherwise, the singer can only produce a counterfeit version of vibrato, typically through unhealthy means. Vibratory sensations in the laryngeal region should not be induced or localized.
What is moderate vibrato in music?
Moderate vibrato involves variation (extent) of about a half step (a quarter step on either side of the pitch) and a rate between 5 and 8 oscillations per second. Vibrato also involves some variation in dynamic level. Rate is discussed in more detail in Vocal Technique.
