Why are planets the shape they are?
Planets are round because their gravitational field acts as though it originates from the center of the body and pulls everything toward it. As a result, these bodies do not form spheres. Rather they maintain irregular, fragmentary shapes.

Today, scientists use geodesy, which is the science of measuring Earth’s shape, gravity and rotation. Because of the force caused when Earth rotates, the North and South Poles are slightly flat. Why are all planets spheres?
A planet is round because of gravity. A planet’s gravity pulls equally from all sides. Gravity pulls from the center to the edges like the spokes of a bicycle wheel. This makes the overall shape of a planet a sphere, which is a three-dimensional circle.
