Ragging was indeed not a real threat; at least not in the open. My room-mate, Devanshu, my only friend back then, was however against the ragging ban. You see, he liked (& still likes) to network. He opined that ragging would create ‘contacts’ with seniors, which would come in handy later on. Consequently, he was eager to get ragged.
