Does an IEP mean im dumb?

What counts as a learning disability?
A learning disability is defined by the Department of Health as a “significant reduced ability to understand new or complex information, to learn new skills (impaired intelligence), with a reduced ability to cope independently (impaired social functioning), which started before adulthood”.
What disabilities fall under an IEP?
To be covered, a child’s school performance must be “adversely affected” by a disability in one of the 13 categories below.
- Specific learning disability (SLD)
- Other health impairment.
- Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
- Emotional disturbance.
- Speech or language impairment.
- Visual impairment, including blindness.
- Deafness.
Is ADHD on the learning disability register?
ADHD is not a learning disability, and it is not a mental health problem. ADHD is a condition which can affect your behaviour. But some people who experience ADHD may also have a learning disability. People with ADHD may also experience mental health problems.
What are disabilities, disorders or conditions qualify for an IEP?
– Inability to learn that can’t be explained by intellectual, sensory or health factors – Inability to build or maintain appropriate relationships with peers and teachers – Inappropriate feelings or behaviors under normal circumstances – General pervasive depression or unhappiness

How to help a child with learning disability?
A child with a learning disability also may have one or more of the following: Acting without really thinking about possible outcomes (impulsiveness) “Acting out” in school or social situations. Difficulty staying focused; being easily distracted. Difficulty saying a word correctly out loud or expressing thoughts.
How does IEP help students?
Mandated by the 2004 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004), the Individual Education Plan (IEP) is an individually tailored education program for students with learning disabilities. An IEP is designed to help each student reach educational goals to which they would otherwise fall short in a standard classroom.
