Can you use normal ink for calligraphy?
You can use any of the ink for calligraphy but choosing the right one for your work is always gonna be helpful. I assume that by “normal pen ink”, you mean fountain pen ink. The answer is yes.
What can I use as calligraphy ink?
You can make calligraphy ink out of acrylic paint, gouache, or watercolor. With gouache or acrylic paint, you can dilute it with water to be able to get some “ink” that you can use with your dip pen.
Can you use normal pen ink in a fountain pen?
The only hard and fast rule that we have is make sure your ink is traditionally formulated for a fountain pen. All of our Cartridges or Bottled inks should be safe with your pen. Do keep in mind that ink cartridges may be proprietary. No matter what ink you choose, we do recommend regular cleaning of your pen.

Most calligraphy inks aren’t poisonous. All calligraphy inks in the TPK Supplies Shop, for example, are non-toxic. There are some inks to watch out for, however! Iron gall ink has — you guessed it — a lot of iron, which can hurt humans if we consume an excess of it.

What type of ink should I use for calligraphy?
Some calligraphy styles requires special type of Inks for instance, you return thin ink for Copperplate calligraphy whereas you require somewhat thick for brush calligraphy. It’s upto what works for you.. If you mean fountain pen ink, you must use it in fountain pens, whether with regular or calligraphy nibs (points).
What kind of ink should I use for my pen?
Intially, you can use any kind of ink, you might prefer dye-based ink as they are thinner. Dye-based ink can be used when it’s not important that the result is lightfast or waterproof, and you can use it with either fountain pens and with dip nib pens.
Why does calligraphy ink clog up my fountain pen?
Calligraphy inks are pigmented, which means their color is derived from not dissolved dyes but from finely ground up solid matter, similar to paint. These particles will clog up a fountain pen. Certain inks, like India ink, contain gum arabic which is a thickening agent that will further clog up a fountain pen.
Can you use dip pen ink in a fountain pen?
In fountain pen ink, the solutes are reduced to the molecular level and therefore it contains no solid matter to clog up a fountain pen. You could use this for a calligraphy dip pen, except that it may be too thin of an ink and may fall off the nib as soon as it hits the page.
