Why did Spain use the Cross of Burgundy?
Habsburgs and Spain Philip, after his marriage to Joanna of Castile, became the first Habsburg King of Spain and used the Cross of Burgundy as an emblem as it was the symbol of the house of his mother, Mary of Burgundy. How did France annex Burgundy?
In 1477, at the battle of Nancy during the Burgundian Wars, the last duke Charles the Bold was killed in battle, and the Duchy itself was annexed by France. The latter territory was ceded to France in the Treaty of Nijmegen of 1678.
Why was Burgundy so rich?
When Margaret’s father died in 1384, Philip inherited the rich Low Countries and integrated them into Burgundy creating a Continental powerhouse. In 1420 Philip made a treaty with Henry V of England (the Treaty of Troyes) which recognized Henry as heir to the French throne. He also allied himself with Henry VI.
