What do you do in a math REU?
Usually REUs have a series of visiting mathematicians who will tell you about their work, and also you get to see how mathematicians interact with each other and with strong students when they’re not in front of a classroom. What is the point of an REU?
The REU program, through both Sites and Supplements, aims to provide appropriate and valuable educational experiences for undergraduate students through participation in research. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects designed especially for the purpose.
How hard is it to get into an REU?
REU programs are highly competitive and you should apply to several programs to maximize your chances of an acceptance. Most students apply to around 10-15 programs, and at least 8 is reasonable.
