Do I need a laptop in IIT?
A survey conducted in IIT Bombay shows that nearly 80\% of students were having a laptop in first year (and those who don’t, tend to borrow it from the college for a period of one semester). Subjects like computer science make it imperative that you own a laptop.

Yes, there is no restriction on laptop or desktop (or their number) in IITs.

It is good to have a laptop, but in case your IIT is near your hometown (less than 12 hours by train / bus), I would suggest that you go in for a Desktop, at least in your first year. Is gaming allowed in IIT Kolkata?
YES. Though when you join IITK they will have you sign an agreement of computer centre that clearly says, no gaming. But relax, no one here checks what you’re doing, you can watch porn, play games, connect to secure servers (some of which are blocked by iitk) by use of vpn.
Is it necessary to have a laptop in the first year?
Although most of the academic work can be done through the department computer facilities or the digital knowledge centre in case you don’t have a laptop, it is advisable to have one. Although it is not a necessity it is essential to have a fruitful first year. I didn’t get a laptop in my first year and I regret choosing not to.
Do students in IITs play video games?
Yes, of course. In IITs students spend their time by playing games only. Various gaming competitions are organised at the institute level. We even play games during our lectures. Don’t worry IITs are the best place where you could sharpen your gaming skills.
