What is AWS VPC?

A virtual private cloud (VPC) is a virtual network dedicated to your AWS account. It is logically isolated from other virtual networks in the AWS Cloud. You can specify an IP address range for the VPC, add subnets, associate security groups, and configure route tables. A subnet is a range of IP addresses in your VPC.

What happens when you create a new Amazon VPC?

AWS will automatically create a default VPC for you and will create a default subnet in each Availability Zone in the AWS region. Your default VPC will be connected to an Internet gateway and your instances will automatically receive public IP addresses, just like EC2-Classic.

Can I create EC2 without VPC?

If you created your AWS account after 2013-12-04, it supports only EC2-VPC. In this case, you have a default VPC in each AWS Region. A default VPC is ready for you to use so that you don’t have to create and configure your own VPC. You can immediately start launching Amazon EC2 instances into your default VPC.

Is VPC a VLAN?

A VLAN is a virtual LAN. Like a subnet, a VLAN is a way of partitioning a network, but the partitioning takes place at a different layer within the OSI model (layer 2 instead of layer 3). A VPC will have a dedicated subnet and VLAN that are only accessible by the VPC customer.
