Why is zero not a counting number?

Because zero was nothing. It is simply absence of a number, which to people of that time did not really come as a number. So the counting numbers started from 1 and that were natural numbers. When the concept of “nothing” was added to natural numbers they termed the new “set” of numbers as whole numbers.
