How hard is it to get into a math REU?
REU programs are highly competitive and you should apply to several programs to maximize your chances of an acceptance. Most students apply to around 10-15 programs, and at least 8 is reasonable.

How competitive are REU programs?
REU programs are an excellent opportunity for students to explore their research interests and gain valuable research experience. REU programs are very competitive pick between 10 – 15 programs to apply to, most have a similar application with no application fee.
Is REUs prestigious?
NSF-REUs are extremely competitive and ‘prestigious’. They are normally research positions that are fully-funded, more on the money later, which last 6-10 weeks during the summer.
How long does it take to hear back from REU?
Most sites will respond after about one month, near the first of March, at which time you will have 1-2 weeks to make your decision. All REU sites will require decisions by the same date, typically around the middle of March.
Why should I do an REU?
Every NSF-sponsored REU provides a stipend to every U.S. citizen or permanent resident participant. Some REUs have funding for international students as well. Most REUs provide housing or a stipend for housing, and most REUs provide a stipend for food expenses. Many REUs also provide some travel funding.
Are REU paid?
Qualified participants will be designated “REU Fellows.” REUs provide educational research opportunities to undergraduate students, and, as such, the participant stipend is not “pay” as it is not intended to reimburse students for services rendered or deliverables received.
What do REUs look for?
REU programs invest a significant investment of time and money in students, and faculty want students who are interested, enthusiastic, work well in a team, and are hard working. At the very least, you can add that you will bring a strong work ethic to any research team you join.
Is REUs paid?
Students participating in REU sites are generally provided with a modest stipend ($4,000–$6,000 for 10 weeks of work), housing, transportation to and from the site, and often arrangements for food. REU individual experiences pay (stipends or on an hourly basis) at about the same payrate as REU sites.

You can do that while you are applying for 2 or 3 NSF REUs. When it comes time for the offers to come in, you’re going to have to weigh your chances and your desire for the program, and communicate back and forth with the programs that are making offers, because there is no standard deadline.
