Do you need to clean sponge filter?
We recommend cleaning your sponge filter once a month or whenever you see a decrease in bubbles (which is caused by the foam getting clogged up with detritus). Squeeze and wring out the foam several times in old tank water. Reassemble the sponge filter and put it back in the tank.
Are sponge filters better than regular filters?
Coarse sponge tips provide a higher flow rate and don’t clog as quickly as finer sponge materials, but they also can’t filter out the smaller particles. HOB filters are ideal if you prefer a more robust and consistent flow rate and want to purify your aquarium water further with chemical filtration.
How often should you replace sponge filter?
We recommend changing the carbon and biofloss every 6-8 weeks. If your tank is heavily stocked with fish, you may want to up that to every 4-6 weeks. The Bio-sponge houses important beneficial bacteria, and it should very rarely, if ever be changed.

The colder the water the longer it takes for the bacteria colony to grow. If you place a new filter into an established tank, it really should be in there for 2-3 weeks minimum for the bacteria bed to find the new sponge and recolonize. Again, stock slowly after that.
