What is Unhinted font?
Unhinted fonts are outline fonts that scale to the requested size unconditionally. At small sizes or low-resolution output devices, the outline may not fit the grid map (pixel spacing) well, resulting in distortion of the shape, reducing readability.
What is hinting and anti aliasing?
Font hinting (also known as instructing) is the use of mathematical instructions to adjust the display of an outline font so that it lines up with a rasterized grid. It can be accompanied by antialiasing and (on liquid crystal displays) subpixel rendering for further clarity.

How are fonts rendered?
Generally speaking, a browser will use the text-rendering engine that’s native to the operating system it is running on. Chrome, for example, uses DirectWrite on Windows, Core Graphics on macOS, and FreeType on Android. Ideally, all text is rendered using subpixel antialiasing because it creates the most legible text.

The simple description of anti-aliasing is that it makes fonts display with smooth curves and angles, not jagged, low res looking edges. So if “anti-aliased ” is smooth, the opposite, hard edged fonts would make sense to be called “aliased.” However, the better term is “bit-mapped.”
