The speculum might feel like it’s stretching out your vagina, but it only opens up the vaginal canal temporarily. It won’t widen or loosen your vagina. A speculum shouldn’t cause damage or injury when used by a trained doctor.
Are You comfortable with a vaginal health specialist of your own gender?
When it comes to my vaginal health, I am comfortable with an expert of any gender, as long they are not a cis-man. This is my choice, and it is one I will not apologize for. Over the course of my life, men have violated me in a myriad of ways.
Should men attend women in childbirth?
“In past centuries, only women attended women in childbirth. Birthing women were in control, choosing who should attend them and where and how to give birth.” Slowly but surely, women lost this control. And there is a reason why it was so lucrative for men to replace women as experts of vaginal health.
Why do I patronize certain OB-GYNs over others?
There is another reason why I patron certain Ob-Gyns over others. I believe that it is vitally important for the future of all genders that we support Doula’s, Mid-Wives, and Gynecologists who do not identify as men. Women-identified people have been educated out of knowing about our health patterns and bodies for centuries.
Are women lucky to have conversations about their health?
And compared to other genders, women are lucky that there are even mainstream conversations happening about our health. Genders outside of the fe/male binary have existed for as long as humans have been alive. The histories of these people are like pencil marks that have been erased from paper.
