How do you treat open pore guitars?
How do I maintain open pore / matt lacquered guitars / ukuleles? We recommend to clean the surface with a slightly moistened cloth and to tap it dry afterwards. Please never use commercially available cleaning agents of polishes, and avoid intense rubbing… matte varnish can become unattractively shiny!
What does open pore?
Open pore means the wood is naturally finished without adding any paint. It’s kind of woody look.
Is mahogany open pore?
Wood Finishing: Some woods, such as oak, ash, mahogany and walnut, have large open pores. If you want to finish these woods to a super smooth surface, then you’re going to have to fill the pores so they are level with the surrounding surface of the wood.
What are open pore woods?
Means it hasn’t been filled in, covered, or smoothed. You will be able to feel the grain of the wood and have a dull, natural look.
Does sanding wood open pores?
Sandpaper is one way to open up the grain of wood. The sandpaper removes the surface finish as well as particles of debris that fill the pores. When this superficial layer is removed, the pores are in a condition for the stain to soak into the wood fibers more easily.
Is Ash an open pore wood?
Ash has straight, coarse, open-pored grain of even texture. It also exhibits a pronounced difference between latewood and earlywood so matching boards requires care.
How many coats of lacquer should you put on a guitar?
Spray four uniform coats of clear lacquer, one hour between coats. Let the guitar dry overnight. Tip: If you get a run or drip in the finish, let the surface dry for 24 hours and level-sand the problem area. If you touch wet lacquer, you’ll leave a deep impression that will be much more difficult to fix.
Is lacquer a good guitar finish?
Although nitrocellulose lacquer may give a guitar an airier sound, its softer texture does make it susceptible to cosmetic damage. This means that dings and scratches are more visible on guitars with nitro finishes, and much easier to inflict.
Does guitar Finish affect sound?
Put simply, the paint thins out over time (hence the cracks you see on nitro finishes) and theoretically the resonance and tone are continuously getting richer, no matter how infinitesimal.
