Can one breaker trip another?
2 Answers. Somewhere the circuits have been bridged together where they shouldn’t be. And if the hots are out of phase with each other, then turning them both on creates a direct path from one hot to the other, and a short, which is tripping your breaker.
Can you use two single pole breakers instead of a double pole?
No, at least in systems with two hot lines, (like split phase as used in the US) you have to use ganged double pole breakers (which are two mechanically coupled single pole breakers) so that both sides trip in the result of a failure. Or if manually cut off they will both be cut off.
Are tandem breakers legal?
Tandem breakers are safe and legal to use only when the panel is designed for them and only in the slots that accept tandem breakers. Look at the manufacturer’s labeling on the inside face of the panel door.

Why are tandem breakers bad?
Another limitation of the tandem circuit breaker is that it cannot take as much heat as a standard single circuit breaker. With two circuits encompassed in the same frame, each wire can heat the same circuit breaker while being under load.
