Can you fly VFR above fl180?
VFR above FL 180 isn’t happening. IFR only about 18000 feet and you have to use the IFR cardinal pressure altitudes.
Can ATC assign VFR on top?
VFR-on-top is an IFR operation. The only thing that’s different is that you, the pilot, operate solely in VFR conditions at a VFR cruising altitude of your choice. You can change VFR altitudes anytime you desire (subject to any ATC restrictions, of course) as long as you notify ATC of that change.
In what controlled airspace are you not required to contact ATC when flying in VMC?
E Class
E Class E airspace is a general category of controlled that is intended to provide air traffic service and adequate separation for IFR aircraft from other aircraft. Although Class E is controlled airspace, VFR aircraft are not required to maintain contact with ATC, but are only permitted to operate in VMC.
Do you have to request VFR over the top?
VFR over the top – flying VFR above a layer of clouds, even a solid layer, and it’s perfectly legal. To fly VFR on top, you must be an instrument-rated pilot on an instrument flight plan and request a VFR-on-top clearance. (To complicate matters, this is sometimes called IFR over the top.)
What is the contrary to VMC?
They are the opposite of instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). The boundary criteria between IMC and VMC are known as the VMC minima and are defined by: visibility, cloud ceilings (for takeoffs and landings), and cloud clearances. Above 10,000 ft, 8,000 m visibility is required to maintain VMC.
When can a VFR flight be conducted on a car 172?
VFR flight may only be conducted (CAR 172, ENR 1.2): provided that, when operating at or below 2000 ft above the ground or water, the pilot is able to navigate by visual reference to the ground or water
How do VFR pilots deal with clouds during daylight flights?
There are two ways in which a VFR pilot typically copes with clouds during a daylight flight. One is deciding on an altitude to fly so that you will avoid the clouds you meet. The other is deciding whether the appearance of clouds along your route suggests that continued visual flight won’t be possible.
Is Special VFR permitted in Class E airspace?
Special VFR is not permitted in Class E airspace Determination of visibility for VFR CAR 174 Flight visibility shall be determined by the pilot in command from the cockpit of the aircraft while in flight.
What is the difference between IFR and VFR flights?
When weather conditions permit, during the time an IFR flight is operating, it is the direct responsibility of the pilot to avoid other aircraft since VFR flights may be operating in the same area without the knowledge of ATC. Traffic clearances provide standard separation only between IFR flights.
